The Laguna Beach Unified School District (LBUSD) board opened its May 22 meeting by announcing it had selected Dr. Jason Glass as its next superintendent and said the board is united behind the choice, with a formal appointment to follow pending contract ratification at the district's June 9 meeting.
An unnamed speaker at the dais said, "We are thrilled to report that the entire board is a 100% behind doctor Jason Glass." The board noted Dr. Glass brings more than 25 years of experience across classroom teaching, district and state leadership, and higher-education roles, and that he and his family plan to relocate to Laguna Beach.
Teachers, union leaders and community members who addressed the board during public comment reiterated support for the selection and for district staff. "We're behind you," Heather Hanson, a high-school teacher, told the board. Several union representatives said they look forward to working with Dr. Glass and praised staff and interim leadership during the search.
Acting superintendent Jeff Dixon thanked the community and staff for their role in the transition and said the district is preparing to onboard Dr. Glass so the new leader can begin work with an established team in place. The board asked staff to prepare the contract and related materials for ratification at the June 9 regular meeting.
No formal vote to hire was recorded at the May 22 meeting; the board characterized the announcement as the conclusion of the search and scheduled the contract ratification for the next regular meeting. If ratified on June 9, the district said it will appoint Dr. Glass as superintendent and publicly welcome his family to Laguna Beach.
