Gilbert Building demolition underway; city reports compliance progress in proactive downtown code enforcement

Beaumont building officials told the City Council on Oct. 29 that progress continues under the proactive downtown code enforcement program and that the Gilbert Building is moving toward structural repairs.
The first-floor demolition has been completed and scaffolding and shoring firms have mobilized to prepare upper floors for safe demolition and roof work. Staff said the property owner is scheduled to decide on Nov. 18 whether to proceed with repairs prescribed by an engineering firm; if the owner opts to proceed, staff expects the repair plan to be submitted to the building office for review.
City staff provided a programmatic breakdown of tagged properties: at the time of the Oct. 29 update there were nine addresses in the work program, six fully repaired, two with active construction permits, and ten filed in court. Staff noted two additional buildings reached compliance since the last report; several properties were added to court filings where work-program timeframes expired.
Why it matters: downtown building safety and compliance affect public safety, property values and downtown economic activity. The Gilbert Building is prominent among tagged structures and staff said continued monitoring and the owner’s upcoming decision will determine whether repairs proceed under permit or additional enforcement actions are required.
Staff said the next downtown code sweep update will be provided at the Dec. 17 council meeting.
