Shenandoah County supervisors recognize 4‑H student leaders

Shenandoah County supervisors recognized a group of 4‑H student leaders at their Oct. 28 meeting, where students described how the youth program has prepared them for future careers and community leadership.
Lindsey Rigby, a county 4‑H co‑adviser, introduced Olivia Hawkins, George Hawkins, Tanner Hawkins and Lizzie Zirkle, who each spoke about skills learned through 4‑H. Olivia Hawkins told the board public speaking has built her confidence and helped her advance to county and district competitions. George Hawkins and Tanner Hawkins highlighted showing and record keeping for livestock and how those activities teach responsibility and planning. Lizzie Zirkle, county 4‑H council president, said her leadership roles have led to statewide opportunities, including serving as a Northwest District ambassador for the Virginia State 4‑H cabinet.
Board members praised the students’ composure and commended volunteers and parents for their support. The students offered to circulate refreshments for the meeting as part of their recognition.
The board did not take action on the presentation; supervisors encouraged residents with youth interested in 4‑H to contact local club advisers for more information.
