Carmel library director reports strong circulation, new programs and ongoing branch work

Bob Sweeney, director of the Carmel Clay Public Library, gave a detailed report to the City Council on Feb. 16 covering library history, services and recent metrics.
Sweeney said the library’s working budget is roughly $10 million, with about 55% of that allocated to salaries and benefits and about 20% dedicated to collection materials — substantially above the state minimum standard. He reported circulation has reached about 2.1 million items and that main-library visits were high last year despite a temporary branch closure for improvements. The library added BookLocker capacity at the main campus and the West Branch and continues to expand popular offerings such as gadget checkout, a Lucky Day collection of new bestsellers, and a digital media lab that produced a short viral video.
Sweeney noted the library will be an election site again and previewed upcoming events, including a 3D printing expo on Feb. 28. He also thanked Liz Hamilton, the foundation director, who is set to retire this year and credited her for author programming and foundation-building work that supports the library’s operations.
Councilors thanked the director and asked follow-up questions about hours, donations and branch scheduling. No formal action was taken; the report was accepted as presented.
