Summary
Fairfax County’s Silver Shield team is recruiting and training outreach volunteers to support scam-awareness events; officials plan recruitment in March–May and ask volunteers to attend the April 30 Scam Jam at the government center.
Emily, a Silver Shield moderator for Fairfax County, said the county is expanding outreach by recruiting volunteers to staff booths, run presentations and help residents find resources. "We are looking at engaging volunteers and helping with those outreach events first," she said, outlining a March–May recruitment window and training schedule.
The recruitment will include two tracks: outreach specialists who staff community booths and volunteer presenters who will be trained to deliver Silver Shield material and a companion consumer-affairs presentation. Emily said volunteers will be expected to attend training, stay current with changing scam information and attend the Scam Jam community event on April 30 at the Government Center.
The program coordinates with Fairfax County departments (police, fire, consumer affairs) and partners such as AARP. Organizers said volunteers should expect to conduct at least two outreach presentations per year and that job descriptions and sign-up details will be shared through the county’s weekly email lists.
A rescheduled 'connection corner' session will run Thursday from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m., featuring Jody Smith facilitating a session on boundary-setting for volunteers and clients. Emily encouraged attendees to check chat links and posted resources for further information.
