Summary
The advisory board approved up to $17,000 to support the Iron Thunder five-state motorcycle run after a presentation from organizer Quentin Jones, who said the event drew hundreds of riders and more than 2,200 weekend visitors last year. Funding will primarily cover meals, building rent and event logistics.
Quentin Jones, president of the Priesthood Motorcycle Ministry, told the advisory board the Iron Thunder five-state motorcycle run drew more than 800 motorcycles and about 1,000 people to the ride last year and that city data showed 2,247 visitors over the event weekend. He asked the board to approve up to $17,000 in support of this year’s run to cover meals, building rent, insurance and portable restrooms.
"We were able to feed 1,000 people," Jones said, describing last year’s event operations and noting organizers tracked paid ride registrations to estimate participation. He said organizers had already received more than 200 commitments from first-time visitors and were seeing earlier-than-usual registrations for the coming year.
Board members asked how attendance and visitor numbers were calculated. Jones said the 2,247 figure came from a city report of weekend visits while roughly 1,100 people could be directly tied to participating in the ride through registration and ride payments. He also said the largest single expense the group requested help with was meals (about $11,500), plus a $1,500 building rental, insurance and porta-potties; the group covers promotional printing, t-shirts and postage.
After the presentation and brief questioning about venue options and attendance trends, a board member moved to approve the full $17,000 request; another member seconded. Members recorded aye votes verbally (Greg Wilson, Brent Warren Gutierrez, Carrasco and Stover) and the motion passed.
Quentin Jones thanked the board after the vote. The approval funds event operations but, according to Jones’ presentation, does not cover the organizers’ costs for promotional materials and other in-kind expenditures the group handles itself.
The board did not attach additional conditions to the funding during the meeting; staff will handle administrative follow-up and disbursement details.
