LaPorte County Solid Waste director to retire April 3; board sets hiring plan and interim appointment

Clay Turner, who has served the district for about 20 years in various local roles, announced Feb. 18 that he will retire and set an April 3 target date for his last day. He asked the board to begin recruitment for a successor.
Board members discussed whether to search internally first, form a screening committee and how to advertise. The group agreed a committee of three board members and two Citizen Advisory Committee members would narrow candidates and then present up to three finalists to the full board for interviews. Paul Brooks was identified as the Citizen Advisory Committee president who would help select CAC members to serve on the panel.
Board members debated advertising approaches and agreed to use the online job site Indeed to broaden reach, citing cost effectiveness. The board voted to advertise the vacancy via Indeed and to accept resumes by the posted deadline.
The board also approved appointing Robin as interim director, with instructions that Robin be involved in ongoing negotiations and kept informed of transition tasks. Members emphasized that the board will review applicants and that an interim appointment can be used if a permanent replacement is not in place by April.
