Alpine Public Library reports rising circulation and program participation

Don Wedderauer, executive director of the Alpine Public Library, updated the council on 2025 library activity and upcoming plans. He reported just under 33,000 library visits, nearly 12,000 visitors to the Lee Reads bookstore, approximately 3,900 children participating in library programs and about 8,200 adults attending programs during the year.
Wedderauer said the library’s silent auction, its largest annual fundraiser, brought in roughly $25,000 and that volunteers played a major role in its success. He outlined upcoming fundraisers and a summer reading program with national themes and collaborations with the McDonald Observatory and other partners. He also summarized GED program activity: the library had five GED graduates in 2025, with three pursuing college and two enlisting in the military; six current GED students are enrolled and the integrated education and training course will begin this week.
The council praised the library’s outreach and rising circulation driven by a reorganized children’s area and expanded youth services. Wedderauer said the library will continue managing the Big Bend Regional Resource Directory with hospital-district funding for another year.
Next steps: Library will proceed with planned programming and fundraising events, and staff will report back on program enrollments and outcomes.
