Traffic commission approves curb cuts, school drop-off no-parking and handicap changes; several neighborhood items tabled

The Fall River Traffic Commission approved several parking and permitting items on Feb. 18 after city engineering review and staff recommendations, and it tabled multiple neighborhood requests pending further information.
Curb cuts: The commission approved three curb-cut applications after the city engineer reported no objections. J and M Development Group (Crip Cuts) was authorized to add a 12-foot opening on Earl Street for a 32-foot total opening; Tucker Darshoun LLC received approval to expand Laurel Street openings (11 feet additional plus a new 28-foot opening); and David Gonzalez was approved to replace an 18-foot curb opening with 23-foot and 24.5-foot openings (total 47.5 feet). Each application was moved, seconded and approved by voice vote; staff recorded that the engineering department had reviewed each location and raised no objections.
School parking: The commission agreed to prohibit parking on both sides of Progress Street from Stafford Road to LeTourneau School during student drop-off and pickup hours (Monday–Friday, 7–9 a.m. and 2–4 p.m.) following meetings with the city engineer and school officials. The restriction passed after a motion and second.
Handicap parking: The commission approved a handicap space for Vivian Ruggiero at 2 Osborne Street after staff verified the registration packet and property-owner letter indicating no off-street parking; signs are expected to be installed in about 12 weeks. A second request for 147 Stewart Street was reviewed and approved after staff confirmed required documentation. Separately, staff requested rescinding several handicap spaces that are no longer used (Hunter Street — 2023; Tunnel Street — 2025; Sprague Street — 2024; Lawn Street — 2021; Seabury Street — 2026); the commission moved and seconded the rescission.
Tabled items and follow-up: The board dismissed or tabled multiple miscellaneous requests: a previously tabled request from 59 Davis Street (motion to dismiss recorded), Ecuador Family Market’s timed-signage proposal was tabled for lack of representation, and a resident request about Brightman Street was tabled. A long-running congestion complaint on Pine/Roberson Street near a veteran center was discussed; the board agreed to seek input from the fire department (Chief Bacon was referenced) and tabled further action pending that input.
The commission concluded with a motion to adjourn.
