The Oldsmar City Council on Feb. 17 approved on first reading an ordinance to update the city's accessible‑parking design standards to match current ADA and Florida Building Code requirements.
Planning & Development Director Tatiana Childress described the proposal as a technical alignment: the city code currently mandates 15‑foot accessible parking stalls in some places; staff recommended reducing the required stall width to 12 feet with a 5‑foot access aisle to be consistent with state and federal standards. "Staff recommends a code amendment to reduce the accessible parking stall width from 15 to 12 feet, with that 5 foot accessible aisle for consistency with both the ADA and the Florida building code standards," Childress said.
She told council that the change is intended to reduce frequent variance requests and improve permitting efficiency; staff submitted a report into the record. No members of the public spoke at the hearing. The council moved, seconded and adopted the ordinance on first reading by roll call: 5 ayes, 0 nays.
Next steps: the ordinance will return for second reading and final adoption at a future meeting.
