The Contra Costa County Hazardous Materials Commission’s operations committee voted to move forward with a public forum on hazardous materials resources, setting Sept. 11 as the target date and directing staff to work with the county PIO on promotional materials and logistics.
Chair Marielle Borsch said the committee had enough commissioner commitment for the Sept. 11 date and asked staff to coordinate speakers. Staff reported Contra Costa Sanitary District had committed to present; the committee plans to invite county sustainability, the air district, fire authorities, DTSC, and other regional partners.
The committee agreed on two core outreach products: (1) an advertising infographic/flyer for social media and partner distribution featuring a short title and bullet points, and (2) a one‑page resource handout or a single one‑page per presenter with QR codes/links to each organization’s materials and to the Hazardous Materials Commission website.
Logistics discussed and provisionally assigned included: a commission table with informational materials and annual reports, greeters and sign‑in staff, two index‑card collectors to manage public questions, a Q&A reader to summarize and present questions to the panel during a 15‑minute Q&A, and Zoom hosting. Commissioners agreed not to require RSVPs but to provide a sign‑in sheet at the event to capture whether attendees are residents or represent groups.
The committee formed an ad hoc planning group (three or fewer commissioners to avoid quorum restrictions) to draft the event title, flyer wording and talking points and to review table materials; the ad hoc outputs will be brought to the operations committee in July and finalized in August so the PIO can issue a 30‑day public notice. Staff will also follow up on permitting, custodial/logistics and whether outside organizations may place informational flyers on the commission table with commission approval.
Committee members confirmed they will debrief and document lessons learned after the forum. The operations committee also discussed scheduling a future Department of Toxic Substances Control presentation to inform public comment on state hazardous‑waste plans; commissioners noted any formal recommendation to the Board of Supervisors would require a full commission vote.
