Huron authorizes recruitment for assistant solid-waste superintendent, approves rate corrections

The Huron City Commission authorized human resources to proceed with a recruitment and transition plan to create a temporary assistant solid-waste superintendent position, HR Director Shauna Starrett said during the meeting.
Starrett said the assistant post would be salaried and exempt from overtime, would be temporary to allow on-the-job training prior to the current superintendent’s retirement, and would not replace the foreman position. "With this plan, I am very hopeful that on April 20 I will have a hiring recommendation for you," Starrett said. She told commissioners she compared job descriptions and compensation with similar municipalities to align the position.
Starrett and other staff said the proposed salary is below the former foreman’s pay and that the department will not exceed its budget in the short term; commissioners discussed that maintaining both superintendent and assistant positions long-term may increase total wage expenditures but could lead to better departmental stability.
Separately, staff presented corrections to solid-waste rates for 3- and 4-yard containers to fix formula and rounding errors in a prior rate resolution; staff said January bills were correct and asked the commission to adopt the corrected resolution language.
The commission approved both the recruitment authorization and the rate-correction resolution by roll call.
