Nye County augments museum budgets after audit flags deficits

The Nye County Board of County Commissioners voted June 18 to augment the FY23–24 budget with an operating transfer to address deficits in the county's museum funds. The resolution approved a $45,000 transfer to the Pahrump Valley Museum and $35,000 to the Tonopah Museum, totaling $80,000.
Museum director Marilyn Davis told the board that a previous small tax reallocation to an airport fund reduced the museums' historical allocation and left them operating at a deficit; as a result, the Pahrump museum will scale back by closing Sundays until the budget is stabilized. The comptroller said the augment was designed to cover both the current shortfall and provide a modest increase in the FY25 budget for more sustainable operations.
Commissioners and the comptroller discussed other revenue options — including room-tax allocations and grant programs administered by historical societies — and urged the museum board to pursue grants and tourism strategies to increase earned revenue and reduce reliance on county operating transfers.
The resolution passed 5–0.
