House creates task force to study crisis response for veterans

The Oregon House approved House Bill 40 99, creating a task force to study and recommend systems for responding to veterans in crisis.
Representative Lewis said the task force will include two nonvoting House members (one from each party) and 12 voting members appointed by the governor, with representation from veteran peer-support advocates, law enforcement, veteran service officers, the Oregon Health Authority, the Department of Public Safety Standards and Training and local governments. The panel will consider veteran crisis response teams, voluntary veteran crisis cards, training needs, entries into the law-enforcement data system and funding recommendations. Lewis said the goal is better outcomes and more de-escalation when veterans in crisis interact with responders.
The task force must report to the legislature by Sept. 15 and the bill sunsets on Dec. 31, 2027. The House declared passage after roll call votes on the floor.
