The mayor told the Port Jervis Common Council that the tentative fiscal year 2025 budget includes a proposed 2.5% tax increase and that the city is not planning to raise water or sewer rates.
In the council meeting, the mayor stated, "I will be imposing a 2.5% tax increase," and added that the budget will not increase water or sewer bills. He also said the city plans to add an information-technology position to strengthen cybersecurity and support required systems in the clerk's office, police and fire departments.
Separately, the Department of Public Works and the Water Department mailed lead service-line notification letters to more than 1,500 homes in Port Jervis, a requirement imposed by New York State and the Orange County Department of Health. The mayor emphasized the letters are intended to build an inventory of potential lead or galvanized service lines and "are not to say that you have lead in your water," and referred residents with questions to the city DPW or the Orange County DOH.
The council also set a public hearing to review and consider the tentative 2025 budget for Nov. 25, 2024 at 6:30 p.m. in council chambers.
Provenance: The mayor's budget remarks and lead-service discussion are recorded beginning at SEG 753 and continue through SEG 831; the public-hearing motion appears at SEG 333–348.
