Souderton council honors 37 years of service by public works director Steve Cole; reports on events and hires

Council members used part of Tuesday's meeting to honor Stephen R. Cole for 37 years as Souderton's public works director, presenting a framed photo with colleagues' messages, gifts and a lifetime membership from the borough organization.
Speaker 3 reviewed Cole's appointment in 1988 and described his breadth of work across sewer, streets, parks and emergency response. "He is the definition of a public servant," Speaker 3 said, citing examples such as quickly responding to a homeowner's sewer connection issue and providing hands-on repairs that saved taxpayer dollars. Colleagues presented refreshments and invited residents to offer thanks in the lobby after the meeting.
The meeting also included routine community and administrative updates. Speaker 4 said the borough's August events went well, announced cancellation and reimagining of the jam event for next year, described a brick-project beautification effort tied to local businesses and student electrical-box painting, and previewed upcoming ribbon cuttings for new businesses. Speaker 5 (public works updates) reported 610 total labor hours in August with highlights including park and rec work, storm drain repairs, completion of sinkhole repairs at West Wall Street, and a sanitary lateral replacement at 200 Noble Street.
Speaker 5 also announced the hire of Kurt Wagner, who brings municipal experience and a commercial driver's license and is scheduled to start Sept. 9. The police chief (Speaker 5 in a separate report) said the department has supported many public events and will begin posting monthly police statistics on Facebook to increase transparency.
The council heard planning and personnel administration updates, including a notice that a stand-alone stormwater/earth-disturbance ordinance required by the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection will be on the planning commission agenda and that work continues on an updated employee handbook.
The council moved from ceremonial remarks into regular business and then recessed for an executive session on personnel issues.
