Monroe Local updates high-school design, temporary construction drive and auditorium plan; board approves security-camera purchase

District staff updated the Monroe Local School Board on Feb. 23 about the new high-school design, temporary construction access, and auditorium and gymnasium planning. The board approved several facilities-related consent items, including purchase and installation of a new main-campus camera system partially funded by a safety grant.
New high school and temporary access: staff said design work is roughly at the 50% mark and that bidding later in the spring will determine which alternates can be included because the project is currently over budget. To maintain operations while an intersection improvement at Yankee and Route 63 is delayed until 2027, staff proposed constructing a temporary drive from Hornet Drive; the district has received a grant from ODOT to fund some intersection improvements.
Auditorium and gym plans: the district is working with Prodigy to develop a prioritized "wish list" of upgrades (lighting, seating, curtains, rigging) with the intent of refreshing the auditorium before the new high school opens. Staff also reviewed options for gym circulation, dual entrances, bleacher placements and potential concessions and locker-room configurations; final schematic decisions are several months away.
Security and safety systems: the board approved purchase and installation of a new camera system for the main campus, integrated with door-access upgrades; staff said a grant covers almost half the cost and the upgrade replaces an aging system. The motion to accept the purchase passed by roll call.
Contracts and small capital items: the board approved irrigation installation for practice fields (baseball already had irrigation; softball will receive irrigation) and a contract for a lead trainer in the high-school career-readiness program. The board also accepted a safety grant for security cameras to be tracked in Fund 422 (safety grant fund) as presented in the treasurer's consent items.
Next steps: staff will return with pricing and phased implementation plans for auditorium upgrades and with bid packages for the high-school construction alternates. The facilities audit (MCS) will provide a longer-term five-year replacement plan to support capital budgeting.
