Superintendent Sonia Coleman opened her monthly report by grounding the board in the district’s mission and priorities and highlighted measurable growth in upper elementary and middle grades that she tied to long-term gains expected at the high school level.
“We are gonna see some high achievement that is gonna start happening at our high school,” Coleman said, pointing to value-added PBOS data that showed middle-grade gains and linking those results to plans to add AP and dual-enrollment courses to increase college- and career-readiness.
Coleman emphasized staff support as a second priority: teachers meet five days a week for professional learning communities, sometimes beginning as early as 6:30 a.m., to review student data and adjust instruction. “A win is a win and I'm going to take that win,” she said, referencing a 1-percentage-point uptick in enrollment from the prior month.
On facilities and operations, Coleman described a phased plan for primary-site fencing that requires utility locating and vendor scheduling; she also reported that plumbing problems at the high school and at a primary kitchen had been repaired. Coleman encouraged community engagement, noting recent events including a ribbon cutting at the McKees Rocks Opportunity Center and the Harvest Fest focused on mental health.
Coleman closed by listing upcoming open committee meetings (safety and technology, finance and buildings and grounds, and a financial advisory committee) and said the district will post opportunities for public participation in drafting a comprehensive strategic plan.
The board thanked Coleman for the report and the district will follow up with committee meeting schedules and a published draft of the strategic plan for public input.
