Board moves to explore adding high-school student representatives; plan for selection to be drafted

A board member reintroduced a formal proposal that had been shared with the board earlier in the month to include one or two high-school student representatives. A community member who had circulated the idea via a Facebook post told the board she had received "overwhelming support" from the community and urged the board to consider adding students to strengthen the connection to the student body.
The superintendent said the district has previously worked with student representatives and recommended starting with an 11th- and 12th-grade model so the 11th grader could matriculate to the 12th-grade seat the following year. A board member noted that student representatives "do not vote" and cannot participate in executive session; the position would be intended to provide reports and perspective to the board on student life, curriculum and activities.
One board speaker cited a current junior-council member, Ella Snyder, as an example of the positive impact students can have on policy discussions. The board asked staff to draft a proposal for selection and candidate criteria over the summer and bring it back for consideration at a future meeting.
