Springfield Local board approves personnel slate, short-term ASL contract and donations

The Springfield Local Board of Education approved routine minutes, a package of personnel actions and a short-term interpreting contract at its April 15 regular meeting.
Among personnel items the board accepted the retirement of teacher Larry Murphy, effective June 1, 2025, and approved resignations for bus driver Yashanta Beckett and classified employee Brandy Bridal. The board also approved new assignments and hires, including Meredith Williams as a teaching assistant at Spring Hill Elementary, Amy Wapuis at Springfield Preschool Center, Paula Schutz as a two-hour cafeteria standby (pending licensure and screening), and a list of teachers receiving one-year limited contracts for the 2025–26 school year. The board approved athletic and non-sports supplemental contracts, including naming Charley Van Riper as the girls’ head soccer coach for 2025–26.
"He brings a wealth of experience," a board speaker said when introducing Coach Van Riper, who was praised for more than 30 years of coaching at multiple levels. Van Riper, introduced by district staff, thanked the board for the opportunity.
The board also authorized a provider agreement with Triad Deaf Services Incorporated to supply American Sign Language interpreters for a student who briefly enrolled and needed short-notice support. District staff explained the engagement addressed a temporary, short-term need — the student was enrolled for only a few days, and the district expects invoicing to cover two days of service.
"This company provides interpreting services for short-term needs," a district staff member said when explaining the contract.
Additionally, the board accepted two pieces of Pyrex test tubes from an Ellet closeout and approved payment of monthly bills pending audit. Each motion was moved, seconded and approved by roll call during the meeting.
The personnel list, contract terms and exhibit references were presented as part of the official agenda. Several approvals were contingent on standard conditions such as proper licensure and pre-employment screening. The board did not refer these items for further study and took formal votes to adopt them during the meeting.
