Committee approves juvenile‑services budget boost as cases surge, cites detention capacity concerns

The Wilson County Judicial Committee approved a budget amendment to add funding to juvenile services after staff described a rise in caseloads and operational needs.

Presenter (S3) asked the committee to add "$14,000 to put into our juvenile services private line," saying the office needs the money to conduct more home and school visits, to cover travel to weekly programming sites and to pay mileage for staff on call. The presenter said the increase in workload was driven in part by what she described as a string of felony threats and mass‑destruction incidents this year and said, "our cases so far this year are up by a 158." Committee members probed whether the extra spending was already in the budget and whether detention capacity issues would create future service gaps.

Members discussed transportation to regional facilities and the difficulty of placing juveniles because local certified beds are limited; one committee member noted transports to several counties and regional centers. After discussion, a motion to approve the requested adjustment was made and the committee voted in favor.

The committee recorded the approval at the committee level; Chair (S1) and staff indicated that additional planning will be needed if detention or placement shortages persist.
