The City Council opened the Jan. 20 meeting by presenting a proclamation honoring Ray Lamar Russell for his decades of local volunteer service, planning and historic preservation work. The proclamation recounted Russell’s service on the planning & zoning board and as a docent, and Mayor Wes Morrison and council members publicly thanked Russell.
At the same meeting the council considered Resolution 202602 to appoint Luke Azaleh Heron as the City of Cape Canaveral’s honorary poet laureate for a two‑year term. Heron read two poems for the record — "Cape Canaveral" and "Let the children remind us of how we used to be" — and the council unanimously adopted the resolution (5–0).
Lauren White, host of the Cape Center poetry show, and other arts community members spoke in support. Council members encouraged Heron to continue writing about Cape Canaveral and thanked the arts community for participation.
