Council members and staff devoted a lengthy report on Jan. 20 to the city’s effort to monitor and mitigate launch‑related impacts.
City representatives said they met with condominium associations, distributed handouts and began deploying sensor equipment: Rollins College will install the first permanent acoustic station at a condominium clubhouse, and Embry‑Riddle (or Rollins/Embry‑Riddle partnership referenced in staff remarks) installed two air‑quality sensors to measure pollutants associated with rocket launches. Staff said the sensors were provided at no cost for research purposes and that additional temporary sensors will be rotated among buildings to collect baseline data across differing construction types.
City staff and council urged condominium associations and homeowners to document property conditions now (photos, video and milestone inspection reports) because certain federal recovery provisions require verifiable, pre‑existing baselines to pursue damage claims. Council members discussed technical differences between sound, overpressure and percussion (the “thump” or vibration felt in structures) and highlighted that future larger launch vehicles could increase both sound and overpressure effects. Staff said they will create public‑facing materials — a dedicated webpage and a planned video series — to explain monitoring results and how residents can document conditions.
Council noted the SLS/Artemis 2 launch window (Feb.–April) and the potential for larger vehicles in the future, and they described regional coordination with other municipalities that have experienced launch impacts. The council received the report and discussed next steps for sensor deployment and public outreach.
