Shade Tree Commission seeks applicants, forms subcommittees and thanks outgoing commissioner Michael Lincoln

The Athens Shade Tree Commission used part of its January meeting to recruit new members and to form volunteer subcommittees.
Chair told listeners the commission will have four vacancies once Michael Lincoln leaves: two permanent seats and two alternate positions. The chair said Jonathan Hoopman had submitted an application and CV to the mayor and clerk and encouraged other qualified candidates to apply to Mayor Patterson and Debbie Walker, the clerk.
Commission members volunteered to lead three subcommittees: one to draft an improved annual work plan and year-end Tree City report; one to overhaul the recommended tree-planting list; and one to pursue alternative funding sources (including the Sugar Bush Foundation and the Athens County Foundation) to revive components of a previously unsuccessful ODNR grant application.
A committee member commended Jonathan Hoopman (referred to as a biologist and an expert) and said they would reach out to local funders. Commissioners thanked Michael Lincoln for long service and the chair closed the meeting after a motion to adjourn was seconded and approved.
No formal appointment votes were recorded during the meeting; the chair said the mayor’s office would review applications and follow up.
