High school to expand work-based learning; Sinclair partnership will guide CCP course choices

Mister McKee told the Valley View Board of Education that the high school will expand work-based learning opportunities and introduce an associate-degree pathway developed with Sinclair to help students choose college-credit program (CCP) classes that align with a two-year degree.
Mister McKee said work-based learning will include internships, IT support roles, a teacher academy that places students in elementary classrooms, school-based enterprise activities like screen printing t‑shirt projects, and expanded FFA and CBI mentorship opportunities. "For every 80 hours that they accumulate, they'll get a half a credit," he said. He described three students already running a media and film team and noted other options including paid internships or in-school experiences that give career exposure during the school day.
The second change McKee highlighted is a pathway developed with Sinclair that creates a recommended sequence for students taking CCP so they more reliably earn credits that apply toward an associate degree. "So that way when our kids are taking CCP ... we're actually giving them a guide of what to take now," McKee said, adding the pathway should reduce random course selection and help families save on postsecondary costs.
Why it matters: Expanding work-based learning and adding a guided CCP pathway could increase students’ readiness for careers or college while allowing students to accumulate transferrable credits before graduation. Board members thanked staff and said the changes offer increased rigor and options for students.
Next steps: Administration will incorporate the expanded work-based offerings and Sinclair pathway into the district’s 2025–26 course offerings and report back on implementation details and enrollment guidance.
