"I really think if this is approved, it's going to diminish the opportunities for female athletes in our district and throughout the state," Melisotti said, adding that male athletes could assume roles currently held by females if the proposed mixed-competition guidance is implemented. "I would urge you to be an advocate as well to take care of our women in our schools. I'll share that with you on Friday then."
Reed walked the board through participation and conduct data, noting the district tracks participation by season and uses a look-back window for conduct violations. He said the district recorded one conduct violation in the 2023–24 period and that the athletics staff contacts parents and administration when a student athlete nears ineligibility thresholds. Reed explained the district has used mod‑a and varsity models as needed and continues merger discussions with neighboring schools to keep programs viable when numbers are low.
After questions, the board approved the athletic code by voice vote. The policy will be updated once state guidance on advanced placement and mixed competition is finalized; the district indicated it will mirror any legally required changes at that time.
