Butler seeks to use DeKalb County permitting system; commissioners authorize interlocal talks

A Butler representative asked the DeKalb County Board of Commissioners for permission to pursue an interlocal agreement so Butler could use the countys permitting software to issue improvement-location permits and integrate building permits into the same system.
County planning staff explained the current workflow: municipalities issue improvement location permits while the county issues building permits and inspections. Under the proposed interlocal arrangement Butler would use county software and retain local control of zoning decisions; the county would continue to issue building permits and perform inspections on Butler projects.
Planning staff said this would reduce redundant trips and paperwork for applicants, make inspections and permit tracking more efficient, and potentially save Butler money compared with procuring a separate system. Butler representatives said they would pay applicable county fees for the service.
The commissioners voted to authorize county staff (including county planner and county attorney) to draft a new or amended interlocal agreement with Butler, work through details and return to the board for final approval.
