Canton Township supervisor seeks public comment on draft master plan

Supervisor Ann Marie Graham Hudak said the Canton Township Board of Trustees on Jan. 14 considered approving distribution of a draft Comprehensive Community Master Plan and invited residents to review and comment on the proposal.
"A master plan is a long range policy document that guides community leaders when making land use and development decisions," Hudak said, adding that the plan also "serves as a legal basis for zoning regulations." She said the draft reflects extensive outreach: "over 1,200 public comments, 1,300 community survey responses, 16 stakeholder discussions, two open houses with 150 to 200 people, and multiple public meetings with the Advisory Board." Hudak credited Canton's Planning Division staff and McKenna Planning Consultant for their roles in drafting the plan.
The draft plan outlines proposals across housing, transportation, commercial corridors, environmental sustainability and preservation, and future land uses the township expects to shape over the next five to 10 years. Hudak said comments on the draft will be accepted from Jan. 15 through March 19 and that the draft is posted online at www.cantonmi.gov/masterplan.
Why it matters: A township master plan frames long-term land-use choices and helps guide future zoning and development decisions. The outreach numbers Hudak cited indicate the township sought broad community input before releasing the draft for public comment.
