Mansfield park staff on Thursday gave the board a monthly project update covering construction and design work across the city’s parks.
Executive/staff lead Fish reviewed ongoing projects and congratulated peers for a Gold Medal program selection in Lewisville. Staff provided slide images and updates on multiple sites, saying construction is progressing rapidly where weather permits and that the new fiscal year starts Oct. 1.
Key project updates: Garrett and other staff reported that Station 63 is open after a grand opening; concrete pads and trail work are under way at the city dog park and a pavilion is expected to begin soon; Catherine Rose Memorial Park has seen heavy positive social media attention; Julian Field’s drainage and pond work is moving forward and old playground equipment will be disposed of and recycled because of lingering liability; Walnut Creek Linear Park Phase 3B side paths are complete and staff expect December completion if weather cooperates; and McLennan Park East crews are finishing utility work with construction set to resume next week.
Design items: Matali said the Hardy Almond project is moving into detailed design, with restrooms, an all‑abilities fitness area and a higher‑intensity “ninja course” planned; construction documents are expected to begin in the coming weeks. Matali also described an 18‑hole routing design for a disc golf course at James McKnight Park West (also called Robert and Anne Smith Park) with additional fairway design and possible understory clearing to follow.
Applications: When asked about applicants for cottages at Geyer Commons, Sarah said there have been 68 applicants, which the Chair called a good turnout.
What’s next: Staff will prepare construction documents and coordinate schedules with contractors; the board did not set new deadlines during the meeting. The board then considered a separate resolution to advance Walnut Creek Linear Trail Phase 4 design work, which it approved by vote.
