Board moves German instructional materials adoption to second reading

The Everett Public Schools board held a first reading on Aug. 25 for proposed German 1'2 instructional materials and moved the item to second reading for possible approval on Sept. 8.
Shelley Bowden introduced a team presentation and introduced Callie Spear, who reviewed the German committee's work and recommended adopting Vista Higher Learning'Mosaique 1, 2 and 3 (2021 edition). Spear said the materials include student consumables, an online Supersite that integrates with the district's Canvas platform, and full access to online textbooks to support remote instruction.
"We are recommending VISTA Higher Learning, Mosaique 1, 2, and 3," Spear said, noting the new edition offers more up-to-date cultural content and digital tools, such as a supervised online conversation-recording feature and practice modules that teachers can set to allow multiple practice attempts.
Spear said the district followed Board policies and procedures for adoption and that teacher teams reviewed materials for bias, fairness and accessibility. She added the team conducted an asynchronous virtual open house this summer and provided appendices and online comment forms for community review.
Board members asked enrollment and program questions: the presenters said the district currently has three German teachers serving about 300 students, with German offered at Cascade and Jackson but not at Everett High or Sequoia due to enrollment levels. Board members asked for an enrollment breakdown and for a Friday report showing where languages are offered across schools.
With that information promised in the Friday report, the board moved the adoption to second reading and set the item for Sept. 8. No final adoption vote was taken on Aug. 25.
