Commission adopts annual land development code update, flags private airstrip language for later

County planner Don McDonald told commissioners the annual Land Development Code update is largely corrections and clarifications, and noted state legislative changes have required local process updates. "So that's gonna, I think, be a common thing," McDonald said, and flagged several topics that changed this year, including legal time frames, ex parte communication procedures, and revised definitions for outdoor storage and lay-down yards.
McDonald said the county removed some items that the state now preempts, such as standards for EV-charging stations and certain agricultural-worker housing approvals, and recommended the board adopt language clarifying where towers and special exceptions would be treated in the code. Commissioners also discussed a recent citizen request to allow private airstrips in the agriculture/silviculture future land use category; staff and the county attorney indicated this would be most appropriately handled by requiring a special exception in the agricultural category rather than making it an as-of-right use.
Commissioners asked for a correction to a packet formatting error that affected the outdoor-storage language, and staff confirmed the red-lined copy in the packet reflected the intended wording. After questions from the board, the commission approved the update by unanimous voice vote.
