Torrington board authorizes $45,027.69 camera contract for police, pending council approval

The Torrington Board of Public Safety voted on March 4 to authorize Police Chief William Baldwin’s recommendation to procure new exterior cameras and related equipment through MHEC contract MC15-E05 with Mammoth Security Inc. of New Britain for $45,027.69, pending final approval by the city council.
“The current system that we have is a coaxial cable system that isn’t compatible with the new cameras,” Police Chief William Baldwin told the board, saying the department is installing a wireless solution that can be controlled internally rather than digging up parking lots to replace wiring. He thanked the board for approving the camera system to restore exterior monitoring capability.
Funding and vote: Mayor Espino said the project will be funded from the police department’s repairs and maintenance capital account GL0311-8888-5900-0104. The board moved and seconded the recommendation and approved the authorization; the purchase remains subject to city council approval.
Why it matters: Chief Baldwin told the board the department’s previous cameras were failing and the new wireless system will restore exterior monitoring and improve departmental oversight without large excavation work. Baldwin also noted the department has improved staffing prospects with conditional offers and a candidate graduating from the Hartford Police Academy.
