Council approves Fairgrounds Road parking and pedestrian safety upgrades

The Farmington City Council voted to approve parking and pedestrian upgrades around the soccer complex on Fairgrounds Road, including relocating driveways, adding curb extensions (bulb‑outs) and moving pedestrian flashers closer to crossings.
Public works project manager Demetrius Henry summarized the design changes: the Fairgrounds‑side lot would increase from 65 to 82 spaces and the Navajo‑Street side from 44 to 60; two pedestrian flashers have already been installed and a third will be positioned after the parking‑lot work. Staff explained they moved away from raised asphalt or concrete crosswalks because meeting ADA slope requirements and avoiding lengthy road closures made curb extensions a better option.
Councilor Rogers moved to approve the plan and the motion carried by voice vote in a four–zero tally. Staff said work on the main Fairgrounds parking lot should be completed by June, with the Navajo side anticipated in 2027 depending on sequencing.
