Board highlights Chicano Heritage Month, honors Mendez family and other local figures

The Orange County Board of Supervisors opened its Aug. 13 meeting with ceremonial recognitions, proclaiming August as Eligibility Professionals Month and Chicano Heritage Month and inviting community members to the dais.
Supervisor Vicente Sarmiento introduced families associated with historic civil‑rights litigation — including the Mendez, Guzman, Ramirez, Estrada and Palomino families — and described Orange County’s role in early cases such as Dos v. Bernal and Mendez v. Westminster. He also noted a Cheech Marin Museum loaned collection on display at the historic courthouse.
Judge Frederick Aguirre, introduced by Supervisor Sarmiento, addressed the board about Chicano identity and local legal milestones that helped shape later national desegregation rulings. "We owe all of our food products, well, about half of what we eat, to the indigenous cultures of Mexico," he told the board as he framed the broader cultural and historical context of the Chicano movement.
Earlier in the meeting the board presented a proclamation for Eligibility Professionals Month, thanking county eligibility staff who support CalWORKs, CalFresh and Medi‑Cal enrollment; supervisors praised recent grants and efforts to expand enrollment navigation.
Later in the agenda the board approved a slate of inductees for the Orange County Hall of Fame, naming honorees including Nick Berardino, Sylvia Mendez and Michelle Pfeiffer, among others. The induction ceremony is being planned for early December.
These ceremonial items were presented without controversy and were approved or recognized by the full board.
