FCPS to convene special education task force to analyze data and recommend priority actions

The Office of Special Instructional Services will convene a task force of diverse stakeholders across three sessions to analyze four data sets (strategic-plan alignment, student outcomes, workforce metrics and barriers) and produce prioritized recommendations on procedural compliance, programming and service implementation.
Kylan Kaufman, speaking for the Office of Special Instructional Services, told the Instruction Committee on March 9 that the office will convene a task force composed of general education and special education teachers, school leaders and central-office representatives to improve outcomes for students with disabilities.
Kaufman said the three-session task force will analyze four key datasets: alignment with the division's Ignite 2030 strategic plan, student outcome metrics (including graduation rates and SOL pass rates), special education workforce data (turnover, caseloads, licensure), and barriers to student success (chronic absenteeism, homebound education needs and discipline trends). The first two sessions will focus on shared understanding and data analysis; the final session will use a matrix for managing complex change to prioritize action steps.
"The recommendations from this task force will help guide our ongoing efforts to strengthen instructional practice, support our educators, and ultimately improve outcomes for students with disabilities across the school division," Kaufman said.
Committee members expressed support and interest in the task force's findings; no formal vote was taken. Kaufman said the task force will synthesize findings after the second session and produce prioritized action steps in the final session.
