Gallatin County issues request for conservation projects, $2.79 million available

Gallatin County commissioners on Sept. 2 formally directed staff to issue a request for project applications under the county's Open Lands Program, announcing that $2,793,740 is available for conservation projects in fiscal year 2026.
Sean O'Callaghan, the county's open lands coordinator, told the commission the county conducts a fall cycle for conservation projects and a spring cycle for other eligible projects. "There is $2,793,740 available this fiscal year to fund conservation projects," he said, and staff recommended a 5 p.m. Oct. 17 deadline for applications.
O'Callaghan said the county will post application materials online and publish a legal notice in the local paper. Commissioners asked no substantive questions during the presentation and moved without opposition to direct staff to issue the notice and establish the deadline.
The action is an administrative step to open the application period; it does not award funds. Staff materials were included in the record and applicants will be asked to follow the published instructions. The commission's vote instructs staff to proceed with solicitation and does not yet commit specific amounts to individual projects.
