West Warwick approves $1.12 million polymer-system upgrade for wastewater plant

Town operations staff recommended awarding a $1,122,000 contract to Hot Engineering for polymer system upgrades at the town’s wastewater plant, and the council approved the award at the March 3 meeting.
The project grew from an immediate need to replace an aging polymer system, staff said, and the scope was expanded to include a permanganate system for odor control, pumps for that system, and additional instrumentation for solids handling and flow meters to improve plant performance and dewatering operations. Staff explained the town currently adds permanganate manually from five-gallon containers; the new system will automate feed during dewatering.
Councilors asked whether the permanganate would be a recurring annual expense and whether the purchase is a one-time capital cost; staff said the system is a one-time purchase while chemical costs will continue annually. After questions about operations and safety the council moved, seconded and voted in favor of the recommendation.
