Edmond approves local match for Danforth & Kelly ODOT grant and awards Broadway ADA/signal upgrades contract

Edmond — At the Sept. 23 council meeting, city staff and council members approved two transportation projects intended to improve safety and mobility at key intersections.
On the Danforth and Kelly intersection project (item 9a), staff said the city will participate in an agreement with the Oklahoma Department of Transportation that enables approximately $7.4 million in federal road-project funds while Edmond will provide about $1.8 million in local matching funds to ODOT for construction. Staff said Edmond has already paid for designs, is acquiring land and is in a utility-relocation phase; ODOT construction is anticipated to begin in 2025, though an exact start date has not been set. Council approved the agreement by motion and vote.
Separately, council approved a bid award and contract for the Broadway Downtown ADA and Signal Light Improvement project (item 9c). Staff described the ARPA-funded project as improvements to six intersections along Broadway that will include wider curb ramps, more prominent crosswalks, replacement of traffic-signal cabinets, new audible pedestrian pushbuttons and other pedestrian-safety features. The base bid came in at about $1.5 million; alternates (including signal work) raised the total to roughly $1.85 million. Staff said the project will proceed intersection by intersection to minimize disruption, will maintain at least one lane in each direction on Broadway, and intends to schedule signal cabinet work on Sundays when feasible. Estimated construction duration is about 120 working days from start. Council voted to approve the award and contract.
What happens next: The Danforth & Kelly agreement will proceed to contract and bonding steps with ODOT; the Broadway project will follow contracting and construction scheduling coordinated with businesses and event organizers to limit impacts.
