Nelson County Commission receives Storm Ready recognition and approves routine county business

The Nelson County Commission handled several routine administrative items at its Nov. 21, 2023 meeting, including receiving a Storm Ready recognition, approving financial statements, scheduling the county employee Christmas party and approving routine maintenance and procurement items.
Emergency Manager Angela Herda and Jim Kaiser, Warning Coordination Meteorologist with the National Weather Service, presented Nelson County with a "Storm Ready Recognition Status." Auditor Nathan Parks then presented the October financial statements; Commissioner Cameron Swenson moved to approve the statements and Commissioner Steve Forde seconded the motion, which passed on a unanimous roll call.
The commission scheduled the county employee Christmas party for Jan. 12, 2024 at the Till House in Lakota and directed Auditor Parks to make reservations and send notices. Commissioners discussed a potential shared Human Resources position with other entities and tabled further action while gathering more information. Portfolio updates included Highway Department mowing oversight, Stump Lake Park Shop construction and other departmental updates.
After lunch, vendor Butler Machinery provided an update on ordered snow removal equipment. Sheriff Kurt Schwind reported vehicle repair timelines and requested replacement of a heater core for a sheriff's pickup; the commission approved that repair (motion by Commissioner Forde, seconded by Commissioner Mork; unanimous roll call). Sheriff Schwind also presented a proposal for a School Resource Officer with shared salary arrangements; the commission tabled the proposal for further research. KLJ provided engineering updates, the commission signed an ND DOT Maintenance Certification (motion by Commissioner Mork, seconded by Commissioner Forde), approved county bills (motion by Commissioner Forde, seconded by Commissioner Mork) and adjourned the meeting.
These routine approvals and scheduling decisions advance normal county operations; items tabled for more information will return to the commission when staff have completed follow-up work.
