Mayor Smathers told the board on Nov. 14 that regional fundraisers and outside organizations provided substantial support to the Town of Canton during flood recovery. He reported that a concert in Cleveland, Tennessee raised $82,000 for the town and that a whiskey-testing fundraiser in Wilmington, North Carolina raised $13,000. He thanked the Carolina Hurricanes organization for its assistance and said he would ask Manager Stinnett to send thank-you letters to donors.
Alderman Shepard suggested that the Town of Canton and Cleveland, Tennessee pursue a sister-city relationship; the suggestion was noted but no further action was recorded in the minutes. Mayor Smathers also noted he was invited to appear at a Carolina Hurricanes game on Nov. 16.
Manager Stinnett asked the board to select a grand marshal for town events; she suggested choosing someone from local radio (WPTL or WWNC 570) because of their work during and after the flood.
