Residents urge animal pound and open bids for janitorial and litter pickup; work session set for March 3

During public comment at the Feb. 3 meeting, resident Joe Dykstra urged Appling County to build an animal pound and suggested possible locations. He also urged the county to pass an animal-control ordinance. County Manager Reid Lovett explained that adopting an ordinance would require a work session followed by two public-input hearings; he proposed dates for that process.
Peggy Smith Burton, representing DAP Services, LLC, asked the board to competitively rebid janitorial contracts that have been continuously renewed and to allow bids for county-wide litter collection. Lovett said some highway segments are currently cleaned by Road Department staff but did not identify a procurement timeline.
Following the public comments, Commissioner Ricky Barnes moved to schedule a work session at 4:00 p.m. before the March 3 regular meeting to begin discussion on animal-control options; Commissioner Daryl Edwards seconded and the motion passed unanimously.
