Gladwin County commissioners approve pay for attendance at all assigned meetings

The Gladwin County Board of Commissioners voted on Dec. 9, 2025 to pay commissioners for attendance at all assigned meetings rather than only the two currently exempted.
Commissioner Tom Winarski moved the change and Commissioner Karen Moore seconded. The measure passed on a roll-call vote: Ayes — Alan Donaldson, Karen Moore, Tom Winarski and Mike Visnaw; Nay — Tami O'Donnell. Chairperson Karen Moore said she will refer the matter to the County Attorney and, if appropriate, add the change to Board rules.
Supporters argued the change would make compensation more transparent and align pay with required duties; opponents cautioned about altering longstanding practice without further review. Commissioner Winarski also said the Board should post compensation amounts rather than only including them in the county budget.
The vote takes effect Jan. 1, 2026, per a clarification by Chair Moore during member reports. The Board took no additional finance action tied to the change at the Dec. 9 meeting.
