Calhoun County Commission moves forward with multiple public-nuisance actions

Calhoun County commissioners on Feb. 12 unanimously approved a slate of property enforcement actions after a recommendation from Environmental Programs Manager Kraig Mize. The commission voted to proceed with abatement on seven properties in Anniston, Oxford, Jacksonville and Weaver and to dismiss nuisance findings on six other parcels.

Mize presented the abatement recommendations listing owners and addresses and said the property owners had been notified of the meeting. During the discussion resident Bonnie Jones asked what violations were identified on 5302 Long Avenue, and Justin Rogers, a contractor working on 16 Boiling Springs Road, said work delays were related to an insurance claim. Mize offered to meet with both after the meeting to clarify next steps.

Commissioner Henderson moved to adopt the abatement resolutions; Commissioner Wilson seconded the motion, which passed by unanimous voice vote. Commissioners later adopted resolutions dismissing nuisance designations for six properties after Mize recommended the dismissals; no owners were present for those items.

Mize also recommended declaring two additional Anniston properties (3931 Bynum Leatherwood Rd and 5328 Glade Rd) to be public nuisances. Commissioner Henderson moved to declare the properties nuisances; Commissioner Wilson seconded and the motion passed unanimously.

Next steps for the properties cited for abatement were not specified in the minutes beyond Mizes offer to meet with concerned residents. The resolutions for abatement, dismissal and additional nuisance declarations were noted as filed with the commission records.
