Calhoun County makes Beautification Board appointments; residents urge EMS support and announce anti-violence event

Calhoun County commissioners filled multiple seats on the Beautification Board and heard several public comments during the Sept. 25 meeting.
County Administrator Jonathan Gaddy announced that each district’s Beautification Board term expires Sept. 30, 2025, and presented appointments effective Oct. 1, 2025 through Sept. 30, 2027. The commission unanimously appointed Bernard Thornton (District 1), Donna Houston (District 2), Belinda York (District 3), Teresa Smith (District 4), Amy Gaddy (District 5) and Sarah Ballard to fill an unexpired term.
During public comment, Chandy Gordon, Prevention Specialist with the Agency for Substance Abuse Prevention, thanked the commission for support and announced a Barbers against Bullets event for Sept. 29, 2025 to raise awareness about gun violence. Dr. David West, Calhoun County Extension Director, thanked the sheriff’s office for assisting with moving office equipment. Johnny Warren, owner of Anniston EMS, asked the commission to consider allocating funds to support local ambulance services, saying the service is facing challenging times. Pat Brown, the county coroner, praised a recently approved memorandum of understanding with Jacksonville State University that allowed transfer and use of a cadaver freezer and said such partnerships are beneficial to the community.
The commission took no immediate action on the public-comment requests during the meeting; comments were recorded in the minutes and the commission adjourned at 10:27 a.m.
