Planning commissioners question agricultural data in draft Chapter 3
Summary
Commissioners at the Nov. 22 work session raised concerns about the accuracy of Figure 33 (the Agricultural Summary) in the draft comprehensive plan, asking staff to review farm counts and acreage and make minor changes where data permits.
At a Nov. 22 work session, members of the Charlotte County Planning Commission pressed staff and the Commonwealth Regional Council on the accuracy of the draft Comprehensive Plan’s agricultural data.
Commissioners discussed Figure 33, the Agricultural Summary, and specifically questioned the number of farms and the reported acreage in the county. Commissioners requested that staff review the figures and make additional minor changes to Chapter 3 where updated or more accurate data are available.
Todd Fortune of the Commonwealth Regional Council reviewed other Chapter 3 updates at the session — including revised traffic‑volume maps, added maps of major broadband carriers and electric service providers, and the addition of timber volume units of measurement — and said the CRC had incorporated available agricultural data into the draft.
Staff did not provide specific replacement figures during the session. Commissioners and staff agreed to follow up with data corrections and revisions to Chapter 3; no formal vote was recorded on changes.
The commission adjourned after deciding not to schedule a December work session. Staff will return with revised materials for the commission to review at a later meeting.
