SLAYTON, Minn. — The Murray County Board of Commissioners on Jan. 27 discussed funding options for the county’s Summer Internship Program after learning the program was not included in the 2026 budget.
Staff said past county support for the program amounted to $115,000 over three years. Commissioners discussed possible alternatives, including making an appropriation from Murray County EDA funds or using general-fund resources earmarked for EDA purposes. The board asked Carrie Bendix of the Southwest Minnesota Private Industry Council to seek commitments from local businesses and return with options; the board did not set a final funding decision at the meeting.
Commissioners also noted feedback from former interns requesting longer weekly hours (about 40 hours versus the 29 hours previously offered) and emphasized a prompt decision is necessary because recruitment must begin soon.
