Veteran parking, AMVETS donation sites draw attention at Simpson County Fiscal Court

Dr. Millie McIntosh told the Simpson County Fiscal Court on Sept. 2 that additional veteran parking spots are needed around Franklin and county businesses and properties. The court approved a $1,000 donation to AMVETS to support veteran parking signs and asked staff to determine how many signs could be placed on county-owned property; Judge/Executive Mason Barnes said he could identify about five potential locations.
Magistrate Marty Chandler raised a related concern that AMVETS donation containers around Franklin have been used to dump prohibited items, creating piles of material at the sites. Chandler asked whether the county could install cameras or otherwise increase monitoring, or whether the donation containers could be relocated to the Convenience Center. The court discussed the options but did not authorize cameras, funding, or a move at the meeting.
Fire Chief Leslie Goodrum said he had sent a pending fire department agreement to County Attorney Sam Phillips for review and offered to attend a City Commission meeting to seek the city’s response; that discussion also included consideration of a possible memorandum of understanding (MOU) and whether a burn ban might be needed, but the court took no directive on those items.
What happens next: the county will determine how many veteran parking signs can be installed on county property and the locations; no enforcement or procurement action for monitoring AMVETS containers was taken during the meeting. The $1,000 donation to AMVETS was approved by motion and recorded in the meeting minutes.
