Sevier County leaders told the Budget Committee on Jan. 23 that the county will apply a ‘compression adjustment’ to its Classification and Compensation Plan to address pay gaps between departments and emergency-services personnel. Mayor Larry Waters and Vice Mayor Bryan McCarter presented the proposal and provided examples of how the adjustment would affect different departments.
The county said the compression-adjustment formula will be applied for all employees and that the Mayor’s Office will continue to review the plan every year. No formal vote on adoption of the plan was recorded at the special-called meeting; the presentation was informational and intended to guide further staff work on implementation and annual review.
The proposal is presented as a countywide personnel adjustment, not a one-off change for a single department, and officials framed it as part of ongoing compensation review rather than a final action. The Mayor’s Office will be the lead on next steps and follow-up reporting.
