Summary
A Lunenburg resident told supervisors that increased large-truck traffic to the landfill has made Shelburne Lane unsafe; the board asked staff to request increased patrols and explored grant options to widen shoulders for a scenic bike trail. VDOT information about a separate intersection’s crash history was also presented.
A county resident told the Lunenburg County Board of Supervisors on Feb. 11 that rising large-truck traffic to the landfill has made Shelburne Lane unsafe and asked the board to seek a left-turn-only lane for vehicles exiting the landfill.
"The road is narrow and there is no shoulder on either side," Lauren Talbert of 316 Shelburne Lane told the board during the Citizen Comment period, saying the number of large trucks and wrecks has increased and that the road cannot accommodate large vehicles safely. She asked the board to contact the Virginia Department of Transportation to install a left-turn-only lane for vehicles exiting the landfill.
Administrator Tracy M. Gee said the county will follow up. Supervisor T. Wayne Hoover asked Administration to contact the Sheriff’s Office and possibly the state police to monitor roads near the landfill for speed and unsafe truck drivers. Supervisor Mike Hankins noted part of Oral Oaks Road is included in a scenic bike trail and suggested pursuing grants to extend a three-foot shoulder to widen the roadway for cyclists and safer vehicle passage.
Separately, Administrator Gee relayed VDOT’s recent review of the intersection of South Hill Road (Route 138) and Dundas Road/Afton Grove Road (Route 137/609). According to the VDOT summary Gee read to the board, "Proper signage and pavement markings are present at the intersection and they are in good condition...There were four reported crashes in the last five years...The two angle crashes occurred in 2020 and resulted in one fatality (July) and one serious injury (August)." Gee said VDOT installed advanced intersection warning signs on South Hill Road on Jan. 15, 2021.
The board did not take a formal vote on the Shelburne Lane request at the meeting but directed staff to coordinate with law enforcement and to research potential grant funding to widen shoulders where the scenic bike trail is affected.
