Simpson County officials warn of cybersecurity attempts; county to consider code and budget changes

Facilities Maintenance Supervisor Bill Rohrs briefed the Simpson County Fiscal Court on Jan. 17 about cybersecurity weaknesses and recommended code and budget changes to reduce risk.
Rohrs said departmental cyber security assessments were completed in cooperation with IT's Adam Wilshire and emphasized that roughly fifty county employees who use county computers should receive training to reduce exposure to ongoing threats. He told the court that cyber data monitoring detected attempts by a foreign country to access one of the county's camera systems; staff changed the camera's IP addresses and, according to Rohrs, there have been no known further unauthorized access attempts.
Rohrs asked the Fiscal Court to prepare Administrative Code amendments and budgetary provisions to implement countywide cyber policy revisions required by the Kentucky Association of Counties (KACo) to maintain cyber insurance coverage and to address identified weak points in computers and phone systems.
The court recorded the briefing in the minutes; no formal directive with a timetable or dollar amount for code changes or training was recorded. The court later recessed to executive session for a business proposal and resumed routine business.
